This weekend's excursion was just a day trip to Versailles. Fortunately, it only took about 45 minutes to get there; unfortunately, it was hotter than ever. Weather.com failed us with its predictions of rain from noon until six at night (80 percent chance of precipitation), and the rain never came. I'm glad it didn't rain, but the combination of heat, dehydration, and dust really got to us by the end of the day. It was exhausting, but the gardens were downright beautiful.
The Palace of Versailles was built under the Sun King, Louis XIV. Construction began in 1661, and continued until his death in 1715. However, it didn't stop there; the palace grew larger and more elaborate throughout the eighteenth century. Versailles includes the palace, gardens, and even Marie Antoinette's personal home and estate.
