The Conciergerie functioned as a prison when it was opened during 1789. It held wooden cages, in which prisoners were piled on top of each other in unsanitary conditions. The entrance to the Concierge is preceded by the Hall of the Guards, one of the oldest Medieval structures still remaining to this day. One famous resident was Marie Antoinette, who was held in the Concierge before her execution date. By the end of its time served as a prison, the Conciergerie had helped condemn 2,780 persons to death.
